Ray Mancini will be the focal point of an upcoming documentary entitled Triumph and Tragedy: The Ray Mancini Story. It is going to show the life of the famous boxer and will air on the 25th anniversary of the Ray Mancini Deuk-Koo Kim fight.
The fight between Ray Mancini and Deuk-Koo Kim ended in the worst way possible. The fight went 14 rounds with Mancini knocking out Kim in the 14th round. Deuk-Koo Kim was able to get back up and make it back to his stool before he collapsed again. Kim was rushed to the hospital where they found out he was brain dead. They put him on life support but removed it within 4 days. This tragedy caused several other things to occur that made lives difficult for those involved. Kim’s mother committed suicide around 11 weeks after her son died. The effect this fight had on Mancini was very devastating. He had not given any in length interviews regarding the fight and the tragedy since it happened. It must have been very hard to deal with what happened. I’m sure he has felt responsible for the death of Kim all these years.
The good news is that Ray Mancini helped in the production of the documentary that is to air on ESPN Classic. There will be never before seen footage of the fight and obviously never before heard interviews with Mancini. It will be very interesting to watch and I’m sure will have some kind of tribute to Deuk-Koo Kim. We will update you on any breaking news regarding this story.
