Joe Torre press Conference took place at 2 p.m. today. In that press conference Joe Torre talked about how he has turned down the contract offer he had received on Thursday. The contract offer Joe Torre received was $5 million in base salary with a $1 million dollar bonus for each series the New Your Yankees got to in the 2008 season. The kicker of the deal was that is was only a 1 year contract.
Joe Torre has been with the New York Yankees for the past 12 baseball seasons. During that time period Joe Torre had done some amazing things, he won 4 world series titles, six American League Pennants, and made it to the playoffs every single season he with the Yankees. That is a very impressive resume if you ask me, there is not another manager in baseball that has those kinds of stats over the past 12 years.
Joe Torre has several things to say about the contract offer and his decision to decline the offer. He stated “I just felt that the terms of the contract probably was what I had the toughest time with.” Joe Torre went on to say “The one year … the incentives; I had been there for 12 years and I felt the motivation wasn’t needed.” “I just didn’t think it was the right thing for me, or the right thing for the players. Whether they’re on my side, or not on my side, any pressure caused by maybe the manager’s going to lose his job, that pressure isn’t needed when the goal is to win baseball games.” As you can see Joe Torre is a very standup guy, he cares more about doing what is right for the team. It indeed would be very difficult to perform under pressure like that for Torre and the players. The New York Yankees have taken all the fun out of baseball and are treating it to much like a business. Understanding that is a business, teams tend to play better and more as a team when there is unity and trust in the manager. All the off field stuff would most likely have caused to much distraction for the players which would hinder there play on the field. I feel it is very respectable of Joe Torre to turn down this offer.
Joe Torre has not said anything yet as to what he will be doing next season. He might take some time off or might consider offers from other teams if any come up. Joe Torre is a very standup guy and in my opinion will definitely be heading to the hall of fame. If any more news is released we will provide an update.
