Exubera, Pfizer Halts Production

Exubera is a diabetes drug manufactured by Pfizer that is inhaled. An announcement today by Pfizer stated that the company has decided to drop the diabetes drug Exubera from production because of lackluster sales. Exubera is manufactured at a plant located in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is known that Pfizer has invested more that $300 million into the plant over the past five years. It had employed 750 workers until this decision what made to stop production.
With Exubera not being manufactured anymore the company has placed 600 of the 750 workers on paid leave is what has been reported in the news. Pfizer is not certain whether they keep the plant open or whether they will close it down. Until this is decided those employees will remain on paid leave. This could be devistation for the 600 workers if they are not able to find other work. The remaining 150 workers will continue to work on manufacturing two different types of antibiotics.
Exubera was approved to be sold on the market by the feds in January of 2006. It was to be a break through drug as it was the first of its kind. Exubera offered a new way to deliver insulin to the body, rather than shots or injections it could just be inhaled. The company sites the lack of popularity among those with diabetes as the main reason why the drug is being discontinued. Hopefully this will not have an effect on the health of diabetes patients who were using the drug.
