What is iron deficiency? In a basic sense it is the most common form of nutritional deficiency that we know of. What does this mean you might ask? Well, to understand what this is you need to know a little about what iron does. Iron is something that resides in all the cells that we have. It has three basic functions, it plays a big role in the enzyme reactions in different tissues, it helps carry oxygen from your lungs to various tissues. These are very important functions that our bodies need to work properly, without having enough iron in your cells there can be very serious consequences. The first would be a very large increase in the possibility of contracting a disease and the second would be a drastic increase in the possibility of death. As you can see it is very important to make sure you have a proper amount of iron intake in your diet. It has been proven that iron deficiency can lead directly to iron deficiency anemia. It is important to have this looked at by a doctor if you have any of the following symptoms.
Iron Deficiency Symptoms
- Excessive Bleeding
- Abnormal amounts of menstrual bleeding
- Bleeding when not on menstrual cycle
- From things such as hemorrhoids and ulcers
- Insufficient intake of iron in your diet
- Substances from ones diet or drugs taken can cause interference in the bodys iron absorption
- Abnormality in the absorption or digestion of nutrients from food intake.
